History

Etchū-Yamada Station opened on 10 August 1951 on the Jōhana Line in what is now Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, 27.5 km from the end of the line at Takaoka, and was operated by Japanese National Railways until passing to JR West at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The station name derives from the former Yamada Village in Higashitonami District. The single-side-platform halt was placed under Fukumitsu Station's management on 19 May 1952, had its ageing waiting room rebuilt in March 2020, and is scheduled to become ICOCA-compatible on 14 March 2026.

Notes

In 1987, the year JNR was privatised, the unstaffed Etchū-Yamada became the first station in Japan to host a Railway Boys' Brigade (鉄道少年団) chapter, despite having no permanent staff of its own.
