History
Shijima Station opened on 22 June 1915 as part of the original Shin-Nonoichi to Tsurugi section of what is today the Hokuriku Railroad Ishikawa Line, in the southern part of Kanazawa. The station once had two tracks and an island platform with passing facilities, but in 1965 the passing loop was relocated to the new Nuka-Jūtakumae Station, leaving Shijima with the single side platform it has today. The station has been unstaffed throughout much of its later operation; rolling-stock historians can still pick out the broader footprint of the former island platform in aerial photography from the early 1960s. The station is numbered I10.
