History

Jichi Medical University Station opened on 27 April 1983 to serve the new Green Town Shimotsuke housing estate and the adjacent Jichi Medical University Hospital. Choosing the name was contentious: host municipality Kokubunji preferred Shin-Koganei, while neighbouring Minamikawachi pressed for Yakushiji after a nearby temple; the university name prevailed just before opening. The station passed from JNR to JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates were installed in 2000 and Suica service began on 18 November 2001. The English signage was updated from "Jichiidai" to "Jichi Medical University" on 1 March 2017.

Notes

Until Ashikaga Flower Park Station opened on 1 April 2018, Jichi Medical University Station held the title of the newest JR station in Tochigi Prefecture.
