History

Tochigi Station is a joint JR East / Tōbu Railway station in the city of Tochigi, Tochigi Prefecture, serving both the JR East Ryōmō Line and the Tōbu Nikkō Line. The JR side of the station opened on 22 May 1888, and the Tōbu side followed on 1 April 1929. The Tōbu platforms were rebuilt as an elevated structure on 17 May 2000, with the station building tucked underneath. Tōbu introduced system-wide station numbering on 17 March 2012, assigning Tochigi the identifier TN-11. The JR platforms — one island serving two tracks — and the Tōbu platforms — one side and one island serving three tracks — share a single integrated concourse.

Notes

Although a JR-and-Tōbu joint station, the two operators handle their tracks in mirrored configurations: JR works at ground level with an island platform reached by footbridge, while Tōbu sits above the concourse on elevated platforms following its 2000 grade-separation project.
