History

Iwama Station opened on 1895-11-04 as a station of the Nippon Railway, serving the former town of Iwama (now part of Kasama City, Ibaraki). It became a state-owned station on 1906-11-01 with the Railway Nationalisation Act, and the 1909-10-12 route-name decree placed it on the Jōban Line. Following the establishment of Japanese National Railways in 1949 and the 1987-04-01 privatisation, it became a JR East station. An elevated station building was completed on 2012-07-24, with the new east entrance and the east–west pedestrian passage Ai-Road entering service the same day. The dedicated ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) closed on 2019-01-31.

Notes

Departure melodies use songs by Kyū Sakamoto, a singer with ties to Kasama City: track 1 plays Let-Kiss, and track 2 plays If You're Happy and You Know It.
