History

Jōshū-Nanokaichi Station serves the city of Tomioka in Gunma Prefecture and is operated by Jōshin Dentetsu on its Jōshin Line, 21.8 kilometres from the Takasaki terminus. It opened on 25 April 1912 simply as Nanokaichi Station, taking its name from the local market town, and was renamed to its present form on 17 December 1921. The station has a single side platform serving both directions. Its surroundings include National Route 254 and the former domain seat of the Maeda-led Nanokaichi han, whose preserved residence stands on the grounds of the nearby Tomioka High School.

Notes

The station's name preserves the memory of the Nanokaichi han, founded by Maeda Toshitaka, fifth son of Maeda Toshiie; the former domain residence still stands inside the grounds of Tomioka High School next to the station.
