History

Kita-Matsumoto Station is on JR East's Ōito Line in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, 0.7 kilometres from the Matsumoto terminus and numbered 41. It opened on 6 January 1915 as Matsumoto-shi Station, the original Shinano Railway terminus, with a depot and both passenger and freight traffic. On 5 April 1915 a connecting line to JNR Matsumoto opened and the station was renamed Kita-Matsumoto for freight only; passenger services resumed on 18 September 1916. Freight handling ended in 1982 and the depot was absorbed into Matsumoto Operations Depot in 1985. The present elevated, castle-themed station building opened on 22 April 2000, and Suica became available on 15 March 2025.
