History

Tobanoe Station opened on 15 August 1926 as a stop on the Jōsō Railroad in what is now the city of Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, and passed to the Kantō Railway through a 1965 merger. The original wooden building, dating from the line's 1926 opening, became a frequent filming location and was the basis for the rebuilt 2008 station, which reused some of the original materials. Staffing was reduced to unattended in 1999. The current single-track configuration places the station 41.0 kilometres from the line's starting point at Toride, where two opposed side platforms still survive on the otherwise streamlined line.

Notes

The 1926 wooden station building appeared in the 2004 film Kamikaze Girls and was preserved in form when rebuilt in 2008 by reusing some of the original materials.
