History

Mikuni-Minato Station opened on 1 July 1914 as a freight terminal on the Japanese Government Railways Mikuni Line, in what is now Sakai, Fukui Prefecture. Year-round passenger service began on 15 December 1927. JGR passenger operations ceased on 11 October 1944, after which Keifuku Electric Railway reopened the station as the terminus of its electrified Mikuni Awara Line. JNR freight ended in 1972 and the station closed entirely following a 2001 accident, before reopening on 10 August 2003 as a Echizen Railway station. The station building was renovated in March 2010 using materials reclaimed from the previous JGR-era structure.

Notes

The current wooden building was reconstructed in 2010 using materials salvaged from the JGR-era original, preserving its early-20th-century appearance.
