History

Okabe Station opened on 16 December 1909 in what is now Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, on the line that later became the Takasaki Line. With the dissolution and privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR East. The site also serves as a freight depot for JR Freight. The layout consists of two island platforms serving four tracks connected to the station building by an underground passage, with platforms two and four used as side tracks for terminating trains. The station is staffed and sits 50.1 kilometres from the nominal starting point of the Takasaki Line at Ōmiya.
