History
Maruoka Station opened on 20 September 1897 as Shinjō Station when the government railway was extended from Fukui to Komatsu, and was renamed Maruoka Station on 15 February 1902. From 1915 the private Maruoka Railway connected at the adjoining Kami-Shinjō Station before consolidating its services on this station in 1930; the connecting line became Keifuku Electric Railroad's Maruoka Line in 1944 and closed on 10 July 1968. Freight and parcel handling ended in 1980 and 1984, and the station passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation. ICOCA acceptance began in September 2018, the station was unstaffed from March 2022 and was transferred to Hapi-Line Fukui on 16 March 2024.

The current wooden station building dates from late 1948, rebuilt after the original was destroyed in the June 1948 Fukui earthquake.
