History

Shinmei Station opened on 25 January 1957 on the non-electrified Esashi Line in Kaminokuni, Hokkaido, as an unstaffed halt handling diesel-railcar passengers only. The station — a single side platform with a small wayside shelter rather than a true station building — passed to JR Hokkaido at the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation. It closed on 12 May 2014 when JR Hokkaido abandoned the Kikonai–Esashi segment of the line; the final services ran the day before. By July 2018 the platform and shelter had been demolished, leaving only the rails on a cleared site; a replacement Hakodate Bus stop now serves the location.

Notes

After the line closed in 2014, Hakodate Bus's Esashi-Kikonai-Sen replacement-bus stop "Shinmei" was placed on the former station site; despite sitting off the main prefectural road, buses in both directions detour to the stop and turn around there.
