History

Sawa Station, in the town of Minowa, Nagano Prefecture, opened in its present form on 16 March 1923, when the Ina Electric Tramway converted its line between Ina-Matsushima and Tatsuno from tramway to railway and relocated the alignment, retiring an earlier Sawa halt on the old line. The Ina Electric Railway was nationalised as part of the Iida Line on 1 August 1943, and the station passed to JR Central at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Freight and parcel handling ended in 1971, and the station was unstaffed from 24 February 1983 when centralised traffic control was introduced. The original building was demolished and a new shelter built around January 1996; the down-line platform was abolished on 14 September 2008.
