The station was built to serve the new Saitama Stadium 2002, then under construction for the FIFA World Cup, and includes a temporary platform (track 3) used only on heavy event days. PASMO support began on 18 March 2007, a western plaza opened in September 2013, and platform edge doors on track 3 entered service on 8 April 2019. Through-running to the Sōtetsu network via the new Tōkyū Shin-Yokohama Line began on 18 March 2023. The station is the only ground-level stop on the Saitama Rapid Railway Line.
