History

Sangō Station opened on 3 March 1980 as a Japanese National Railways station on the Kansai Main Line between Ōji and Kawachi-Katakami in present-day Sangō, Nara. It was built in response to a long-running local petition campaign — a commemorative monument stands in front of the station. The Yamatoji Line nickname was adopted on 13 March 1988. Automated ticket gates entered service on 21 July 1998, ICOCA IC card service began on 1 November 2003, and station numbering as JR-Q30 was introduced in March 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi closed in February 2014, and the Midori no Kenbaiki Plus successor was removed on 9 January 2025. JR West took over operations at privatisation on 1 April 1987.

Notes

Sangō is the only station on the JR network in Nara Prefecture where no rapid services stop — a consequence of its position at the narrow Kame-no-Se gorge, a chronic landslide zone on the Yamato River.
