History

Kitasandō Station is an underground stop on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line in Sendagaya 4-chōme, Shibuya ward, Tokyo, numbered F-14. When the Fukutoshin corridor was first planned as Tokyo Line 13, no station was envisaged at Meiji-dōri's Sendagaya area; the stop was added after Shibuya ward and others lobbied for it, with permission granted in May 1999. The working name was "Shin-Sendagaya", but the operator adopted Kitasandō from the nearby Meiji Shrine north-approach gate and the Meiji-dōri intersection of the same name. The station opened on 14 June 2008 alongside the Fukutoshin Line itself. Its single island platform on basement level 2 lies only about 16 m below ground, making it among the shallowest new-build stations on the line.

Notes

The Toei Ōedo Line passes directly beneath the Kitasandō intersection at this point, but no interchange was built — the Ōedo plan never included a station here and Yoyogi sits too close for one to be justified.
