History

Sakaori Station opened on 11 February 1926 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways' Chūō Main Line, in what is today Sakaori 1-chōme in the city of Kōfu, Yamanashi Prefecture. The station was operated by JGR and its successor Japanese National Railways through the postwar era, until scheduled freight services ended in November 1986. Following the JNR break-up and privatisation on 1 April 1987, the station came under JR East. Suica-compatible automatic turnstiles were activated on 16 October 2004, and the current station building, replacing the older structure, was completed in February 2006.
