History

Keiō-hachiōji Station opened on 24 March 1925 as Higashi-Hachiōji Station (東八王子駅), the terminus of the Tamanan Electric Railway, on Kōshū Kaidō in Myōjin-chō, Hachiōji. The Tamanan was absorbed by Keio Electric Tramway on 27 December 1926, after which through services to Shinjuku Oiwake (the original Keio Shinjuku terminus) began. On 31 May 1944 wartime amalgamation brought the line under Tokyo Kyūkō Dentetsu, and on 1 June 1948 Keio Teito Electric Railway was demerged and took over the station. On 11 December 1963 the station was moved 190 m closer to Kitano under Hachiōji's urban plan, and renamed Keiō-hachiōji Station. The line between Kitano and Keiō-hachiōji was double-tracked on 3 June 1970, completing double-tracking of the entire Keio Line. The station was rebuilt as an underground station on 2 April 1989, with two-platform access added (Central and West Exits). Keiō Plaza Hotel Hachiōji opened on the JR Hachiōji north-side reserve land on 9 September 1994, ending the long-held plan to extend the Keio line into JR Hachiōji Station.

Notes

From 16 November 2011 onwards arrival melodies use the songs "Hero" and "Ato Hitotsu" by the Hachiōji-formed rock band FUNKY MONKEY BABYS, with a separate dedicated melody when the limited-stop "Keiō Liner" service arrives.
