History

Setagaya Station opened on 18 January 1925 as a stop on the Tamagawa Electric Railway. On 31 March 2013 the up- and down-side platforms were both shifted roughly 10 m toward Sangen-Jaya as part of the widening of the No. 1 Setagaya level crossing. The Setagaya Line, on which the station now sits, was split off as an independent operation when the parent Tamagawa Line was abolished in 1969, and is today operated by Tōkyū. Station number SG05 was assigned in 2007.

Notes

Setagaya Station is normally unstaffed, but during the four-day Setagaya Boroichi (rag market) held every December and January, staff are temporarily deployed to collect fares and manage crowds. The station is the closest stop to the Setagaya Ward Office from the Shimo-Takaido direction, and the Boroichi market street runs directly past the platforms.
