History

Maihama Station opened on 1 December 1988 on JR East's Keiyō Line in Urayasu, Chiba, planned from the outset as the rail gateway to the newly opened Tokyo Disneyland. A second northern entrance was added in July 2001, and Suica use began that November. Disney-themed departure melodies replaced the standard bell in June 2004 and have been swapped repeatedly to mark resort anniversaries. To manage growing crowds the elevated island platform was extended by roughly 100 m (about 45 m toward Tokyo, about 55 m toward Soga), with the longer stopping positions entering service on 29 January 2022. Station numbering JE07 was introduced in 2016. Through Musashino Line services also call here.

Notes

Walt Disney's licensors blocked a proposal to call the station "Disneyland" in case businesses nearby co-opted the name, so it was named for the local district instead — though Hong Kong and Shanghai's later parks did get "Disney" stations.
