History

Takaosan Station is the upper terminus of the Takao Tozan Cable Car (Takao Kōsaku Line) on Mount Takao in Hachiōji, Tokyo, sitting at an elevation of about 472 metres on the mountain's slope. The 1.020 km line, built by the Takao Tozan Railway, opened with this station on 21 January 1927. The station building houses the large motor that winds the cable. Service was suspended on 11 February 1944 during wartime restrictions and resumed on 16 October 1949. The station gained barrier-free elevators ahead of the introduction of the fourth-generation cars 'Aoba' and 'Momiji' on 23 December 2008. The Eco Lift chairlift, also operated by Takao Tozan Dentetsu, runs parallel from a separate Sanjō (山上) terminal at 462 m, opened on 10 October 1964.

Notes

The cable car runs at 15-minute intervals, but during peak periods such as new-year shrine visits and the spring/autumn foliage seasons, services are increased to every 7 minutes 30 seconds. The line also operates all-night on New Year's Eve into New Year's Day for shrine visits and sunrise viewing at the summit.
