History

Kumihama Station opened on 15 December 1929 when the JNR Minetoyo Line was extended from Toyooka. It became a through station on 10 August 1932 when the line continued north to Tango-Kizu (now Yūhigaura Kizuonsen), at which point the route was renamed the Miyazu Line. Freight handling ended in 1975 and parcel handling in 1984. The station passed to JR West with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and was then transferred to Kitakinki Tango Railway in April 1990. A new station building was completed in 1991. The line passed to Willer Trains (Kyoto Tango Railway) on 1 April 2015. From 15 March 2025 the station no longer hosts scheduled limited-express services.

Notes

The current station building is modelled on the exterior of the prefectural office of Kumihama-ken, a short-lived prefecture that existed at this site from 1868 to 1871, and carries the nickname "Memorial Gate Kumihama."
