History

Shōwajima Station opened on 7 February 1985 as an unstaffed stop primarily for workers commuting to the adjacent Shōwajima rolling-stock depot, when the Tokyo Monorail consolidated its operating divisions from Hamamatsuchō to that depot. From 19 June 1992 all local trains began stopping here. The station became fully staffed on 28 September 2000. Suica acceptance began on 21 April 2002. On 10 March 2007 a passing loop was placed in service and a platform canopy and underground waiting room were added; from 18 March 2007, the timetable revision allowed Airport Rapid services to overtake locals at this point. The station reverted to unstaffed operation on 1 October 2022.

Notes

Shōwajima is one of the rare monorail stations in Japan with a passing loop — its four-track layout was added in 2007 to allow Airport Rapid services to overtake all-stops locals.
