History

Fuchinobe Station opened on 23 September 1908 with the Yokohama Railway between Higashi-Kanagawa and Hachiōji. The Imperial Railway Agency took over operation on 1 April 1910, with the line formally nationalised on 1 October 1917 as the Yokohama Line. A 6.1 km dedicated branch line passed beside the platforms to reach the US Army Sagami General Depot until freight handling ended on 1 October 1979. JR East took over on 1 April 1987. The station was renovated on 17 January 2003, gaining a pedestrian deck and escalators on the north side. Smart platform doors entered service on 19 February 2021.

Notes

JAXA has proposed naming a crater on the asteroid Itokawa "Fuchinobe Crater," after the neighbourhood whose Sagamihara campus first directed the Hayabusa probe to the asteroid.
