History

Ōiwa Station opened on 1 January 1950 as a new stop between Iwami and Fukube on the Japanese National Railways' San'in Main Line, in the town of Iwami, Iwami District, Tottori Prefecture, 214.8 km from the line's terminus at Kyoto. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962. From 1 June 1968 operations were contracted out to Nihon Kōtsū Kankōsha, and from 10 February 1972 parcel handling ceased and the station was de-staffed. With the 1 April 1987 dissolution of JNR it passed to JR West. The single side platform sits on a raised embankment of several metres, reached by either a flight of steps or a ramp. Only local trains stop here, and fiscal 2018 ridership averaged 204 passengers daily.

Ōiwa is a noted cherry-blossom spot, with the trees planted along the embankment around the platform.
