History
Wakasa-Arita Station opened on 20 June 1964 as an unstaffed passenger-only halt added between Ōtoba and Kaminaka on the Japanese National Railways' Obama Line; it is the most recently opened station on the line. At the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. A car park was added in 1992 and a barrier-free ramp and accessible toilet were installed around 2004.

Notes
The station is read "Wakasa-Arita," but the surrounding place-name is properly pronounced "Arida"; the official toponym and the station name diverge in voicing on the second character.
