History

Shimohōjō Station opened on 10 March 1915 on the San'in Main Line, then under the Railway Bureau, between Agei (now Kurayoshi) and Yura. The name derives from the former Shimohōjō village in which the stop was built and has been retained through every subsequent local-government merger. Freight and parcel handling ended on 10 February 1972, after which the station was destaffed. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR West. A boarding-certificate machine was installed around March 1993, and ICOCA support is scheduled for introduction in spring 2027.
