History

Takatsuki Station opened on 10 March 1882 when the government railway extended from Nagahama to Yanagase, beginning as a general station on what is now the Hokuriku Main Line. It settled into that line in October 1909 after reclassifications in 1895 and 1902. The section was AC-electrified in October 1957, and double-tracking through Takatsuki was completed in September 1958. After the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West and JR Freight. A new station building opened on 16 October 2005, and on 21 October 2006 the line was converted to DC operation, bringing Special Rapid services and ICOCA acceptance. Station number JR-A06 was assigned in March 2018.

Notes

In 2005 a local committee surveyed residents about renaming the station to avoid confusion with Takatsuki Station in Osaka Prefecture and recommended “Omi-Takatsuki”, but the town assembly rejected the change after estimating it would cost tens of millions of yen without commensurate tourism benefit.
