History

Higashino Station opened on 24 May 1933 as a general station of the Japanese National Railways Akechi Line when the Oi - Agi section opened, in what is now Higashino, Ena, Gifu Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 15 October 1959, parcel handling on 21 October 1961 (when the station was made unstaffed), and on 16 November 1985 the line was transferred from JNR to the third-sector Akechi Railway. The station building was rebuilt on 3 December 2008 as a three-storey steel-framed combined building incorporating a senior-only rental housing complex by the medical corporation Keiyu-kai; the ground floor houses a short-stay/day-service care facility together with the station waiting room and toilets, with the rental housing occupying the second and third floors. It is station 10 on the Akechi Line.

Notes

The 2008 rebuild is unusual in being a combined station building and senior-only rental housing block, an explicit experiment in mixing transport and care infrastructure for an ageing rural community along the Akechi Line.
