History
Shimonagaya Station opened on 14 March 1985 with the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line's extension from Kaminagaya to Maioka. The stop had not been part of the original 1970s plan, which envisaged Maioka as the only intermediate station between Kaminagaya and Totsuka, but rapid residential development after 1971 - including the Higiriyama Keikyu New Town - led the city to add Shimonagaya during construction. Elevator and accessible-toilet upgrades were completed on 29 March 2002, platform-edge doors entered service on 4 August 2007, and Wi-Fi began on 1 May 2012. The station name follows the historic 'Shimonagaya-cho' district.

Notes
The Blue Line tunnels here have a hybrid cross-section - a box girder for the platform halls but arched tubes for the running tracks - which results in the unusual sight of arch-supporting pillars standing in the middle of the platforms.
