History
Shimogiri Station opened on 26 December 1952 as a Japanese National Railways stop on the Taita Line, in what is now the city of Kani, Gifu Prefecture. From the start it was an unstaffed halt handling passengers only. The station was absorbed into the JR Central network on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR, and the waiting shelter was rebuilt in March 1989. The TOICA IC-card system became usable here on 13 March 2010, and the line code is CI03. The station has a single ground-level side platform serving one track, with no station building — only a small waiting room remains.
