History

Higashi-Yamakita Station was added to the Japanese National Railways Gotemba Line on 25 December 1956 in response to a local petition, the same day that Sagami-Kaneko Station two stops away also opened. Diesel-railcar passenger trains were the only services in the early years and the station was unstaffed from the outset. On 27 April 1968 the section between Kōzu and Gotemba was electrified, electrifying the station's tracks as part of the work. The station passed to JR Central with the JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the TOICA IC card was introduced on 2 March 2019. Station numbering CB05 was assigned on the Gotemba Line in March 2018.

Notes

Higashi-Yamakita is a ground-level single-platform halt on the southern side of the track, with a useful platform length of about 160 m allowing trains to spot at either the Numazu or Kōzu end depending on direction. The opening of Kanagawa Prefectural Yamakita High School near the station in August 1970 led to it being used by many students; daily boardings here run about 200 more than at Yamakita Station, the next stop. A small stele commemorating the station's opening stands on the platform.
