History

Umezako Station opened on 3 November 1904 with the inauguration of the Government Railways' Fukuchiyama - Shin-Maizuru (now Higashi-Maizuru) line, which was immediately leased to the private Hankaku Railway. The Hankaku Railway was nationalised in 1907, and at the 1909 establishment of the rail line naming system the station became part of the Hankaku Line. In 1912 the Ayabe - north section was renamed the Maizuru Line, where the station has remained ever since. Freight handling ended in 1961, and the station has been unstaffed since 1973. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station came under JR West.

Notes

Although the station is read "Umezako", the local Umezako Post Office is read "Umesako" — the two readings of the same kanji coexist within the same neighbourhood.
