History

Adogawa Station opened on 20 July 1974 as a Japan National Railways station on the Kosei Line in present-day Takashima, Shiga Prefecture, 45.0 km from the line's starting point at Yamashina and 50.5 km from Kyoto. The station was built with two opposed elevated island platforms above a ground-level station building, a layout it retains today, and remains staffed. With the privatisation of Japan National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR West. Station numbering was introduced across the Kosei Line in March 2018 and Adogawa was assigned JR-B16. In fiscal 2019 the station handled an average of 1,596 boarding passengers per day.
