History

Kamonomiya Station traces its origins to the Sakawagawa signal box, opened on 21 October 1920 on the Japanese Government Railways Atami Line. It was upgraded to a full freight-and-passenger station on 1 June 1923 and absorbed into the Tōkaidō Main Line on 1 December 1934 once the Tanna Tunnel completed the trunk route. Scheduled freight was discontinued in 1970 and parcel handling in 1972, and the present elevated station building opened in November 1976. Suica turnstiles entered service on 18 November 2001. JR East has operated passenger services since the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation, with JR Freight retaining a parallel freight rights agreement.

Notes

The station was the closest stop to the Kamonomiya base of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen Model Line, and a south-side commemorative monument reading "Birthplace of the Shinkansen" marks the connection.
