History
Shōnai Ryokuchi Kōen Station opened on 6 September 1984 as the new western terminus of the Nagoya Municipal Subway Tsurumai Line when the line was extended from Jōshin. It served as a start/end point for approximately ten years. On 12 August 1993 the Tsurumai Line was further extended to Kami-Otai and through-running with Meitetsu's Inuyama Line began; at that point Shōnai Ryokuchi Kōen became a through station, but Kami-Otai's turnback facilities were not yet complete, so non-through trains continued to use this station as the inner terminus. That arrangement ended on 30 March 1994 with the completion of turnback facilities at Kami-Otai. The planning-stage name for the station was simply 'Shōnai Park'. Three elevators (between each platform and the concourse, and from the concourse to the surface) entered service on 5 December 2006. Administrative oversight of the station moved from the Tsurumai Line Station Affairs District Kami-Maezu Management Station to the Tsurumai Line Operations District on 1 April 2019, and platform screen doors entered service on 14 October 2024.

Notes
Shōnai Ryokuchi Kōen has two opposed side platforms on the underground Tsurumai Line, and Akaike-bound trains can turn back here. With the opening of Kami-Otai it became a regular through station, but in case of disruption on the connecting Meitetsu Inuyama Line, trains have been known to terminate here on standby. Because the platforms are sharply curved, sightlines are poor end-to-end, so the operating non-emergency horn is sounded loudly on approach; in the early-running, lower-frequency hours before the through-extension to Kami-Otai, only one side was used at a time. The station and the next stop towards central Nagoya (Shōnai-dōri) pass beneath the Shōnai River, and watertight bulkheads are installed on the river-facing side of each station for flood protection. The wide riverbed has attracted many driving schools to the immediate vicinity, including CBC Driving School and Chukyo Driving School.
