History

Nebukawa Station opened on 21 December 1922 as part of the JGR Atami Line extension from Odawara to Manazuru. On 1 September 1923 the Great Kantō earthquake triggered a landslide that swept the original station and an approaching down train into the sea, killing about 130 people; the rebuilt station was relocated to the higher ground above. With the Tanna Tunnel opening in December 1934 the line was absorbed into the Tōkaidō Main Line. Freight ended in 1970, parcels in 1972, and JR East has run the unstaffed cliffside stop since the 1987 privatisation. Suica gates arrived in November 2001.

Notes

The platform swept into the sea by the 1923 landslide still lies on the seabed offshore and now functions as an artificial reef and recreational dive site.
