History

Shiga Station opened on 20 July 1974 as part of the brand-new Kosei Line built by JNR along the western shore of Lake Biwa in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture. Operations passed to JR West on 1 April 1987 at the JNR privatisation, and ICOCA card use began in November 2003. The station, configured with two elevated opposed side platforms above a ground-level building, served as a partial stand-in for the former Ōmi-Kido stop on the abandoned Kōjaku Railway, which had closed in 1969. Station numbering JR-B21 was introduced in March 2018; staff were withdrawn on 1 September 2025.
