History

Yabachō Station opened on 30 March 1967 on the Nagoya Municipal Subway's Meijō Line, in Naka-ku. The station was not part of the original plans for the Kanayama-to-Sakae section, and was only added in May 1964 — eight months after construction had begun in September 1963. The station is named after the historic Yaba-chō neighbourhood, a name that no longer survives in the city's residential address system but persists in the local intersection name. Direct underground passageways link the station to Matsuzakaya Nagoya and to Nagoya Parco. Barrier-free works including a lift were completed in 1994 and renewed in 2012, and platform-screen doors began operating on 2 and 23 August 2020.
