History

Sakuragawa Station (Ohmi Railway number OR29) opened on 1 October 1900 with the inauguration of the Yōkaichi–Hino section of the Ohmi Railway, in Sakuragawa-Nishimachi, Higashiōmi, Shiga. With the absorption of the Yōkaichi Railway by Ohmi Railway on 1 March 1944 the line name was set and the station became part of the Ohmi Railway Main Line. Freight handling ended in October 1972, and the station's official duties were discontinued on 20 December 1987 when it was converted to unstaffed operation, although full unstaffing was not completed until 2010. The historic original station building is still standing, with the former staff offices closed off but the waiting room still in use.

Notes

Sakuragawa is the principal station for the former town of Gamō (now part of Higashiōmi), and the station building dating from 1900 still stands today, although the inside has been mostly closed off since the station was destaffed.
