History
Kitayama Station opened on 24 October 1990 when the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line was extended north from Kitaōji to Kitayama. The station served as the line's northern terminus for almost seven years, until the further extension to Kokusaikaikan on 3 June 1997 turned it into a through station. The underground station consists of an island platform serving two tracks on B2 with a concourse and single ticket gate on B1, and ICOCA-compatible PiTaPa was added on 1 April 2007.

Notes
From the late 1980s through the 1990s the area around Kitayama transformed from rural farmland into a strip of boutiques, cafes and patisseries that gave "Kitayama" a distinct fashion-district reputation in Kyoto.
