History

Kitaōji Station opened on 29 May 1981 as the northern terminus of the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line, alongside the line's initial Kyoto-Kitaōji section. It remained the terminus for nearly a decade until the line was extended north to Kitayama on 24 October 1990. The site sits beneath the former Kyoto Municipal Tramway's Karasuma Depot, and the bus terminal one level above the platforms was moved underground in 1995 when the Kitaōji Town building opened above it. ICOCA-compatible PiTaPa was added on 1 April 2007, the in-station retail arcade Kotochika Kitaōji opened on 19 March 2018, and platform-edge doors entered service on 21 January 2023.

Notes

The station and its complex sit atop the former Karasuma Depot of the Kyoto City Tram, which closed in October 1978; the Kitaōji bus terminal above the platforms is one of the largest run by Kyoto City Bus.
