History

Ōtsukyō Station is a Japan National Railway-era stop on the Kosei Line, located in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture, and operated by JR West. The station opened on 20 July 1974 as Nishi-Ōtsu Station when the Kosei Line entered service between Yamashina and Ōmi-Shiotsu. It passed to JR West with the 1987 privatization of JNR and was renamed Ōtsukyō Station in 2008. Sitting 5.4 km from Yamashina and 10.9 km from Kyoto, it operates as a staffed elevated station with two island platforms above the concourse.

Notes

The original name Nishi-Ōtsu was chosen after Ōtsu City lobbied JNR to keep "Ōtsu" in the name rather than the planning name Kita-Ōtsu.
