History

Saga-Arashiyama Station, formerly known as Saga Station, is on the San'in Main Line (Sagano Line) in Ukyō-ku, Kyoto, and is operated by JR West. It opened on 15 February 1897 as the terminus of the Kyoto Railway, becoming a through station when the line was extended to Sonobe on 15 August 1899. Nationalization followed in 1907, with reorganization into the San'in Main Line in 1912. JR West took over from JNR in 1987, and the station was renamed Saga-Arashiyama in 1994 to highlight the famous Arashiyama sightseeing district. It also serves as the starting point of the Sagano Scenic Railway.
