History

Sanjō Keihan Station opened on 12 October 1997 with the initial Daigo–Nijō section of the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tōzai Line, in Higashiyama Ward, Kyōto. It links via an off-fare underground concourse to the Keihan Main and Ōtō Lines' Sanjō Station, and effectively replaced the former Keishin-Sanjō Station of the abandoned Keihan Keishin Line. Because the surrounding streets left no room for turnback tracks, Keishin Line through-trains were initially extended to Kyōto Shiyakusho-mae rather than turning back here, with the 2008 extension routing some services through to Uzumasa Tenjingawa. IC card travel using PiTaPa began on 1 April 2007, and the ticket gates became unstaffed on 1 November 2022.

Notes

The name predates the subway — local bus stops and the wider district had long used Sanjō Keihan, a corruption of the older Sanjō-dōri Keihan-mae for the area in front of Keihan's Sanjō Station.
