History

Shijō Station opened on 29 May 1981 as part of the first segment of the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line between Kitaōji and Kyoto. Located beneath Karasuma Street just south of the Shijō-Karasuma intersection, it has the station code K09. The PiTaPa IC card was introduced on 1 April 2007, after which the north concourse was rebuilt in 2010, with the ticket gate sliding about 30 metres south. The 'Kotochika Shijō' retail concourse — the first in Kyoto City's transit retail series — opened on 1 October 2010, and platform-edge doors went into service on 10 October 2015.
