History

Kokonoe Station opened on 1 June 1921 on what is now the Uchibō Line, taking its name from the former Kokonoe village. Small-lot freight handling was discontinued on 1 October 1962, and the station was made unstaffed on 1 July 1972. It passed to JR East on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways. A new station building replaced the timber original in February 2007, and Suica acceptance — together with absorption into the Tokyo Suburban Area — followed on 14 March 2009. In March 2021 the layout was reduced from two opposed platforms to a single side platform, and the disused side was closed.
