History

Niimi Station opened on 25 October 1928 with the completion of the Hakubi Line, and revenue services on the section through Niimi began on 25 November of the same year. The Sakubi West Line reached Iwayama on 14 April 1929 and the Sanjin Line branched from Bitchū-Kōjiro to terminate here from 10 February 1930; both became, in turn, part of the Kishin Line in 1936 and the Geibi Line in 1937. Freight handling ceased on 25 December 1983. With the breakup of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. The 1991 establishment of the Bitchū Railway Subdivision inside the station building was discontinued in 2008. ICOCA became usable here from 17 December 2016.

Notes

Although the Niimi city centre lies about 1 km southeast across the Kumatani River, the station was placed on the opposite bank for civil-engineering reasons and remains separated from the historical "Niimi" of its name.
