History

Shin-Shizuoka Station is the western terminus of the Shizuoka Railway's Shizuoka–Shimizu Line, 11.0 kilometres from the opposite end at Shin-Shimizu, set in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka, inside the Cenova shopping complex. It opened on 9 December 1908 as Takajōmachi Station and was destroyed by the great Shizuoka fire of 15 January 1940. Renamed Shin-Shizuoka on 1 October 1954, it became the city's principal tram-and-rail interchange until the Shizuoka city tramway closed on 15 September 1962. A large bus terminal was opened on 10 May 1966 and the original Shin-Shizuoka Center department store opened five days later. That building closed on 31 January 2009 and was demolished alongside the bus terminal; the larger, 11-floor Cenova shopping complex opened in its place on 5 October 2011, with the bus terminal reopening on 11 October 2011.
