History

Toba-kaidō Station opened on 15 April 1910 with the launch of the Keihan Main Line. The line became part of Keihanshin Kyūkō (today's Hankyu) in October 1943, briefly closed in September 1945, and reopened the following May. Operation returned to Keihan Electric Railway after the 1949 demerger. A pedestrian subway replaced the level crossing inside the station in July 1968. From the March 2016 timetable change, midday locals were removed, leaving only sub-express service. Wheelchair ramps and a dedicated accessible gate were installed in 2022.

Notes

The 1960s Tōkaidō Shinkansen route was nearly built past Toba-kaidō without stopping at Kyoto Station — local political pressure pushed the line back through Kyoto.
